Writing a CV isn't most people's idea of fun. But in a competitive job market, your CV is one of the most important tools you have. It's your first impression, your personal sales pitch, and often the difference between getting an interview or getting overlooked.
Recruiters usually spend just a few seconds scanning each CV, so yours needs to be clear, relevant and easy to read from the moment it's opened.
1. Tailor your CV to every role
It's easy to one-click apply and use the same CV for each application, but this can often lead to key experience being overlooked or missed entirely. Take a few minutes to read the job description and tweak your CV so it highlights the skills and experience that matter most for that role.
2. Personal profile
Think of this as 3 to 5 lines that quickly explain who you are, what you do and what you're looking for. Keep it short, sharp and focused.
3. Keep it clear and easy to read
If a recruiter has to work hard to understand your CV, they probably won't. Use clear headings, bullet points and a simple, clean layout. Your CV should be easy to scan in under 30 seconds.
4. Keep it under 3 pages
Unless you're applying for a highly academic or senior role, two pages is more than enough. Employers are looking for relevant highlights, not your full life story.
5. Check for spelling mistakes
This one sounds obvious, but you'd be surprised how often we see CVs with simple errors. Spelling mistakes can make you look careless, even if you're not. Always proofread your CV, and ideally ask someone else to check it too. Fresh eyes catch things you won't.
6. Don't include unnecessary information
Your CV doesn't need your full home address, your date of birth, your relationship status or a photo. Keep it professional, relevant and focused on your career.
7. Update your CV regularly
Don't wait until you're desperate for a new job to update your CV. Get into the habit of adding new responsibilities, achievements, and courses or qualifications. Your future self will thank you.
8. Most recent experience first
Hiring managers and recruiters want to see your most recent position first. Keep it in order of most recent at the top, least recent at the bottom. This makes understanding your career much easier.
Your CV is your personal brand on paper. It tells a story about who you are, what you're good at, and why an employer should want to meet you. If you take the time to tailor it and keep it clear and honest, you'll already be ahead of most candidates.
